Engagement doesn't just plateau in high school — it declines. Brookings found that approximately only 1 in 4 of 10th graders say they love school. And fewer than half of high school students report being asked to actually think — most say that their main job is to memorize.   These aren't separate problems: They're the same problem.   But something is changing.   Across the country, schools are tearing up the blueprint for the industrial schoolhouse and putting a primacy on engaging, rigorous, real-world learning experiences — proving that transformation of learning is possible. We're launching a series of stories to document how a diverse set of schools and systems are doing this work.   Our first story focuses on three systems in the Carnegie Foundation and XQ Future of High School Network — Eastern Hancock Schools (IN), Henrico County Public Schools (VA) and the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (MA) — all of which are intent on pushing learning way beyond classroom walls. Their work surfaces three hard-won lessons for the field: Structural flexibility isn't a luxury — it's a prerequisite. You cannot transform learning inside a rigid system. Readiness is built, not screened for. Real-world experience is how students develop it. New roles are required throughout the system — teachers as learning verifiers, counselors as connectors, administrators as brokers with the outside world. I invite you to read the full piece and the stories to follow in the coming months. The Future of High School Network — and this series — is grounded in Carnegie’s National R&D Agenda for High School. In the months ahead, we will share news of a growing web of research partnerships that combine scholarly rigor with deep practitioner expertise — designed to inform and illuminate high school transformation nationwide.   The stakes are clear — so is the opportunity. Let’s not let it get away.     In partnership, Timothy Knowles President, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching FEATURED NEWS Teachers Like It. Research Is Promising.
