We need a renewed social contract between institutions of higher education and the American people — one that is laser focused on student success. That conviction is what led the Carnegie Foundation and American Council on Education (ACE) to introduce the Student Access and Earnings Classification, which captures the extent to which a postsecondary institution represents the students in the locations it serves and how student earnings compare to peers in their job market after leaving the institution.   We have identified 478 institutions as Opportunity Colleges and Universities (OCU). These institutions deliver both high access and competitive earnings and are true drivers of economic mobility, enrolling 2.75 million undergraduates nationwide. They include the broadest range of institutions - community colleges, HBCUs, tribal colleges, and globally recognized research institutions. They train artists, educators, engineers, health care professionals and everything in between.   Now, we are excited to launch a new series with ACE highlighting these colleges and universities and the work they are doing to accelerate student success. The first profile focuses on the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), which has the distinction of being both an OCU and an R1 institution for its very high research activity. Under Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda, UIC is focused on providing the broadest access to the highest levels of educational and research excellence to the communities they serve.  Faculty come to UIC because they want to change the trajectory of students’ lives. Students come to work with world-class scholars and get on the path to purposeful careers. In essence, UIC proves that access and excellence can thrive side by side. The idea that hyper-selectivity is the path to improved results is a myth.      UIC is just one of hundreds of OCUs across the country showing what’s possible when institutions commit to access and outcomes — and the story doesn't end there. There are nearly 400 additional institutions that are within close reach of the designation. Together, these “near OCUs” enroll more than 2.5 million students.    Ted and I love talking about this work — and we recently caught up for a fireside chat at SXSW EDU. As Ted said during our chat, “We're finding that the attention of America is probably in the wrong place. We should be looking at those institutions that are doing the right thing for students.” In the months ahead, I hope you enjoy our efforts to focus on precisely that.      In partnership, Timothy Knowles President, Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching FEATURED STORY Advancing High School Innovation in NYC Public Schools: A Conversation with Supervising Superintendent Dr. Alan Cheng Read more → FEATURED PROFILE Opportunity College and University Profile Series: University of Illinois, Chicago Read More  → A New National Effort Aims to Spread Learning Beyond School Walls (EdWeek) IPR Scholar to Lead Work on Student Learning and Development as a Carnegie Senior Fellow (Northwestern University Institute for Policy Research) Colleges Are Finally Confronting Their Outcomes Data (Washington Monthly) The “Big Blur”: A Renewed Call to Merge High School, College, and Career (Center on Reinventing Public Education) From Campus to Career: Advancing Career-Connected High Impact Practices (Lumina Foundation) Connect Your Community to Our Work.
